   The page used to link https://fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=Cairo…&family=Inter…, and on
   2026-09-14 Ahmed opened the website and the Arabic was drawn in a fallback face. Measured from
   his machine, in the same minute:

       fonts.googleapis.com   200 in 0.25s      (the STYLESHEET arrives)
       fonts.gstatic.com      nothing in 21s    (the FONT FILES never do)

   Twenty-one seconds is a TCP connect giving up. So the browser reads a perfectly good @font-face
   block and then cannot fetch a single woff2 it names — the worst shape a failure can take, because
   the stylesheet succeeding is what makes it look like the font simply is not there. The same page
   on another device on another network drew Cairo correctly, which is the whole point: it is not
   the site that is broken, it is the road to gstatic, and that road is out for an unknown share of
   the people we are asking to trust this product — Morocco and Egypt among them, and Meta's
   reviewers for all we know.

   A font is not something to make a network round-trip to a third party for. These are 7 files
   totalling 259 KB, and the browser downloads only the subsets a page actually uses: an Arabic page
   takes cairo-arabic (31 KB).

   THE FILES ARE THE SAME FONTS, from @fontsource-variable (the Google Fonts corpus repackaged for
   self-hosting): one VARIABLE file per subset, so 400/600/700 all come out of it and there is no
   file-per-weight. The unicode-range values are Google's own, copied so each subset is fetched only
   when a character in it is drawn. The family names are 'Cairo' and 'Inter' — NOT the upstream
   'Cairo Variable' — so every stylesheet that already names them keeps working untouched.
